Fun Links

The links on this page have nothing to do with the class or with the law. They are simply a compilation of fun links submitted by students and professors alike.

Pointless but Fun

Commercials from the '50's and '60's
This site lets you listen to radio and TV commercials from the '50's and '60's for everything from Alka-Seltzer to Winston Cigarette ads. Even though the site doesn't have streaming audio (you have to wait until the files download to listen to them), it's worth it to hear ads for products like Slinkey, Mystery Date, Hawaiian Punch, and Doublemint Gum.

Despair, Inc.
If you're tired of seeing those motivational photos and slogans that dot corporate walls everywhere, these demotivators are a welcome parody. For example, a beautiful photo of lightening in a red and purple sky graces the Despair, Inc. demotivational message about hope: "Pessimism -- Every dark cloud has a silver lining, but lightening kills hundreds of people each year who are trying to find it." Or on service: "Apathy -- If we don't take care of the customer, maybe they'll stop bugging us."

WackyUses.com
They call them "wacky" uses, but these pages give you tips on unusual ways to get more mileage out of everything from yogurt to Slinkeys. Learn to tone your skin with one and keep your gutters leaf free with the other.

Urban Legends Reference Pages
Ever wish that someone would check into those urban legends and give you the real scoop on whether or not Lionel Richie and his Dobermans really scared some woman by accident in a Las Vegas elevator? Or whether the government is actually considering a $0.05 surcharge on every e-mail in order to fund the U.S. Post Office? Or did a guy really disintegrate when he put a solid fuel rocket on his car and fail to miss the cliff-wall?

Entertainment

Gist.com
This TV listing delivers nicely organized TV lineups that you can customize to show only the channels you're interested in. You can create a TV calendar that lets you track the dates and times of your favorite weekly shows, and you can even have gist e-mail you a daily listing so you don't have to keep revisiting the site. They also offer TV news, program descriptions, and fan club links to keep up with what's on.

MoviePhone.com
The people who brought you 444-film and 777-film phone services bring you MoviePhone.com. Enter your zip code and find out what's playing. You'll also find movie reviews, synopses, and other great movie info.

National Public Radio
NPR fans, you can hear all of the shows you missed when you weren't in your car, or the shower, or wherever you are when you usually listen. Streaming audio makes it easy to listen -- no matter how long the show, clips load and begin playing in just a few seconds. And those shows that don't offer streaming audio do offer links to their sites.

Shopping

MySimon.com
Simply type in the name of a product, and MySimon searches the Web for on-line retailers or auctions (your choice) that carry that item. You can sort the returned list by supplier or by price. It's a great way to bargain hunt.

AbeBooks.com & Alibris
These unrelated on-line book stores have something in common in that they are actually networks of thousands of smaller booksellers. You can track down hard to find titles, used books, and collectors books all over the world.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
Ok, so this site isn't so fun. But like they say, they're interested in "reducing the risk of injury or death from consumer products." So before you buy your friends and loved ones that potentially life-threatening "must have" gift, check out this site. Also learn about everyday household dangers, such as why the "Handy Home Lighter" may be a little too appropriately named.

Investments

CompanySleuth.com
Track up to 10 stock symbols with this service, and your entry page automatically links you to the latest prices, news, SEC filings, patent filings, chat groups and more that give you background on those companies. And the service sends you a single e-mail each day to let you know what's new.

Nasdaq Market Home Page
Go to the source to track the technology stocks and penny stocks that always seem to be in the news. And you can even get the news here, too.

Research and General Knowledge

BetterTown, You Desktop Ready Reference
This site has links to dozens of reference sites: encyclopedias, factbooks, style guides, glossaries, dictionaries (English, foreign language translators, and miscellaneous sources such as American Sign Language, English feudal terms, slang, and hacker's dictionaries), acronym sources, science references, thesauri, geographic references, people directories, periodical indices, and libraries.

NASA Human Space Flight
Learn about all things NASA, and take a peak at Space Shuttle missions when they happen to be floating around up there. A great way to indulge voyeuristic impulses without breaking any rules.

HyperHistory On-Line
This site is based on the popular historical wall charts that show various world history time-lines side-by-side. For example, now you can see at a glance what was happening in India, Europe, or the Americas at the same time Genghis Kahn was busy expanding his Mongolian Empire.

Historical Atlas of the Twentieth Century
Another history site, but this one uses color coded and keyed maps to geographically show you the history of the last century. At a glance, you can see the world-wide alliances of the Cold War from 1945 to 1960, or the border changes in South America or Europe over the past 100 years.

U.S. State Department -- Bureau of Consular Affairs
Before you go, learn a little about your foreign destination from the people who care most about these types of things. Learn about other nations, their population, economics, culture, visa requirements, and more. Most importantly, be safe and make sure you know about any travel advisories. No matter where you go, these guys have something on them.

Commonly Requested Consumer Protection Services
Go to the source and find out how you can protect your rights as a consumer. Report fraud, find out about recalls, and get info from the FTC on consumer issues. You can even learn more about the U.S. Coast Guard. And, if you figure out why the Coast Guard is included in the consumer info area of this government site, drop us a line from our
Contacts page -- we're dying to know.

Search

NorthernLight.com Search Engine
A fairly recent NPR news article on search engine research named NorthernLight as the search engine that hit more registered Web sites than any other. After you enter your search terms, you can browse the hit list just like any other search engine, or you can click on the blue folders on the left side of your screen where NorthernLight has further sorted the list into categories. Searching is made a little easier with this handy function.

Chicago Reader SpaceFinder -- Your On-Line Apartment Hunter
If you're tired of combing hundreds of apartment listings that only seem to show you the wrong sized apartments at the wrong prices in the wrong neighborhoods, then this site can help. Enter a Chicagoland neighborhood, a price range, and an apartment size, and SpaceFinder searches the Chicago Reader classifieds to find just the right place.

High School Alumni
Ever wonder where your best friend from Junior year is now? Maybe they have registered with HighSchoolAlumni.com. Drop them an e-mail.
